Amarok ID3 tags...

May, 2013

I continue to learn about Amarok v2.5.0 on the current Kubuntu LTS version so that I'll be able to write a document on how to use it -- "Amarok for Dummies" :-)

Since it's taken me so long to get it to work, it would probably be helpful for others trying to learn how to use it.

"artist" ID3 Tag

One very important ID3 tag is the "artist" tag. Don't guess the artist's name. If you want the Composer's information to be displayed, search for the Composer you want in Wikipedia. Once found, use the complete name used in Wikipedia and use that in the "artist" ID3 tag.

In other words, enter the Wikipedia search words you used to get you to the page of interest to be displayed when this song plays.

In this example the singer "Donovan Phillips Leitch" will bring up the correct page in Wikipedia. If you simply put "Donovan" You will get the incorrect page.

One idea I had to improve the information displayed, is to use different "Artist" ID3 tags in  different tracks of the same CD, so that say track one gives information about the composer, or the type of Classical Music. The second track might offer information on the orchestra. Other tracks might give information on the soloist.

This is possible and easy by just searching in Wikipedia for the page of interest, and using the unique search for  that page  as the content of the "artist" ID3 tag. Of course you can easily edit these as the music is playing by right-clicking on the track of interest in the playlist.

"album artist" ID3 tag

The documentation said that Amarok also used the "album artist" id3 tag, but if  the "artist" id3 tag is left blank, and the "album artist" id tag is used instead, incorrect information or no Wikipedia information was displayed.

I don't see any reason to use the "album artist" tag, and think it is an error in the documentation.

ID3 tags Used by the Current Track Appelet

"title" ID3 tag is used by the "Current Track" Appelet to display the current song.

"artist" ID3 tag is used to display "by _________"

"album" ID3 tag is used to display "On ______________"

In the example that follows, "Mellow Yellow" is the song, "Donavan Phillips Leitch" is the artist ID3 tag, and the Album ID3 tag is "Donavan_Samples,"
so the Current track display reads:

Mellow Yellow
by Donovan Phillip Leitch
on Donovan_Samples
